You build the pause points and signpost phrases into the speech itself, before you ever deliver it. This is what PACE calls Command Cadence: a small, repeatable bank of phrases and pause markers placed at fixed points in a keynote or board address, so the speaker has room to think, room to breathe, and room to hold the pace of the room, without needing the entire script word for word.
A memorized speech is fragile. The moment a word slips, the speaker has two choices: freeze while searching for the exact missing word, or panic and speed up to cover it. Both read as a loss of control to the room. The speech was never actually unstable. The delivery method was.
Command Cadence solves this differently. Instead of memorizing a fixed script, the speaker learns a small set of phrases that mark where a pause belongs and what to say while buying that pause. The content underneath can flex. The structure holds.
A signpost phrase like "Here is the core of it" or "Let me be direct about what matters here" does three things at once. It tells the room a key point is coming, which resets their attention. It gives the speaker a half second to organize the next sentence. And it replaces silence-as-panic with silence-as-authority, since a deliberate pause after a signpost phrase reads as command, not hesitation.
This is the same mechanism behind buying-time phrases used live in unscripted meetings, applied instead to a prepared speech. The room cannot tell the difference between a pause you planned and a pause you are taking in the moment. It only reads the pause itself.
Command Cadence is one of three techniques inside what PACE calls Speech Engineering, alongside Phonetic Profiling (choosing the words that come easier from the speaker's mouth) and Rhythmic Breath Calibration (cutting each sentence to the speaker's natural breath, not the other way around).
